The Legend of Sapta Rishi Aarti

Every evening at 7:00 PM, an unbroken tradition dating back centuries comes alive inside the sanctum sanctorum of Kashi Vishwanath Dham.

According to the Shiva Purana, when the seven great sages (Sapta Rishisβ€”Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vashistha) sought supreme enlightenment, they gathered at the Jyotirlinga in Varanasi. Lord Shiva appeared before them and was worshipped with specific vedic hymns.

To this day, seven priests representing the unbroken lineages of these seven sages conduct this aarti simultaneously. The Shivalinga is adorned in a glorious flower crown (Sehra) made of thousands of fresh white mogra and red roses, while conch shells and giant brass bells create an acoustic resonance that vibrates through your chest.

Suryanshu's Advice: "Book the Sapta Rishi Aarti pass online via the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust portal at least 3 weeks in advance. Stand along the southern courtyard steps to hear the chant rebound off the sandstone pillars."
