Hidden Gems of Varanasi (Kashi)

95% of tourists never step beyond the main ghats. Step into the clandestine world of subterranean sun stepwells, leaning stone sanctums submerged in river currents, wrestling akharas consecrated with turmeric, and 4th-generation distillers of baked-earth perfume.

Lolark Kund (The Sun God's Ancient Stepwell) Ancient Stepwell

Lolark Kund (The Sun God's Ancient Stepwell)

📜 Pre-Vedic / Mentioned in Mahabharata • 📍 Near Tulsi Ghat, Shivala

One of the oldest surviving water monuments on earth, Lolark Kund is dedicated to Lolarka (the trembling Sun God). A steep flight of massive moss-covered sandstone steps plunges 50 feet down into an emerald-green subterranean water reservoir illuminated only by overhead sunlight.

✦ Why Suryanshu Recommends It

"During the Lolark Chhath festival, thousands of childless couples take a sacred dip at sunrise, offering vegetables and fruits to the sun. Even on regular days, its monumental architectural geometry is a visual masterpiece."

📸 Photography Tip:

Bring a wide-angle lens. The steep symmetry of the descending steps against the ancient stone walls offers one of the most cinematic compositions in Banaras.

Ratneshwar Mahadev (The Leaning Temple of Kashi) Architectural Marvel

Ratneshwar Mahadev (The Leaning Temple of Kashi)

📜 19th Century (Queen Ahilyabai Holkar's reign) • 📍 Manikarnika / Scindia Ghat water edge

Often called Kashi Karvat, this massive stone Shiva temple leans precariously into the river Ganges at an astonishing tilt of over 9 degrees—significantly steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa (which tilts at about 4 degrees!). For most of the year, its sanctum is submerged under river water.

✦ Why Suryanshu Recommends It

"According to myth, a servant of Ahilyabai built this temple to repay his debt to his mother ('Matri Rin'). The goddess cursed it saying a mother’s debt can never be repaid, causing it to lean forever into the waters."

📸 Photography Tip:

Take a rowboat right next to the leaning spire at dusk. As the river ripples against the stone columns, you feel the mysterious weight of time and faith.

Kabir Chaura Math (Sanctuary of the Mystic Weaver) Spiritual Sanctuary

Kabir Chaura Math (Sanctuary of the Mystic Weaver)

📜 15th Century • 📍 Kabir Chaura, Near Lahurabir

The historical hermitage where the great mystic poet-saint Sant Kabir lived, wove cloth on his handloom, and composed his fearless dohas that challenged religious orthodoxy. The math houses Kabir's preserved handloom, wooden khadau (sandals), and centuries-old hand-written manuscripts.

✦ Why Suryanshu Recommends It

"The neighborhood is also the legendary cradle of the Banaras Gharana in Indian classical music. Masters of tabla, sarangi, and vocal arts have lived in these alleys for generations."

📸 Photography Tip:

Sit in the courtyard under the ancient Neer-Kshir tree. You can often hear students of classical music practicing tabla bol and vocal scales through the open windows.

Traditional Akharas of Tulsi Ghat Living Heritage

Traditional Akharas of Tulsi Ghat

📜 Over 450 years old • 📍 Tulsi Ghat, Southern Riverfront

Founded by Goswami Tulsidas himself to keep young youths physically strong and disciplined, this traditional akhara maintains centuries of Kushti (Indian clay-pit wrestling). Wrestlers mix mustard oil, turmeric, and buttermilk into the sacred red earth.

✦ Why Suryanshu Recommends It

"A rare glimpse into a disappearing monastic athletic lifestyle. At 6:00 AM, wrestlers worship Lord Hanuman, swing giant wooden clubs (gaddas), and spar in the sacred pit with utter devotion."

📸 Photography Tip:

Always remove your shoes before stepping onto the perimeter of the mud pit. Ask respectfully before taking photographs; the wrestlers are warm and love demonstrating their strength routines.

The Ancient Ittr & Scent Ateliers of Thatheri Bazar Artisan Craft

The Ancient Ittr & Scent Ateliers of Thatheri Bazar

📜 Centuries-old artisanal trade • 📍 Deep inside Thatheri Bazar, Chowk

Tucked behind the metal-beaters' street lies a subterranean network of perfumers who distill pure natural scents using traditional copper Deg-Bhapka distillation. The most famous is 'Mitti Ittr' (the fragrance of baked summer earth catching first monsoon raindrops).

✦ Why Suryanshu Recommends It

"Commercial sprays vanish in hours, but genuine Banarasi ittr is hydro-distilled in sandalwood oil and matures with age like vintage wine. One tiny vial lasts for years."

📸 Photography Tip:

Ask for 'Shamama' (a complex winter blend of over 40 Himalayan herbs and resins) and pure 'Gulab Ittr' distilled from Chunar damask roses.

Ratneshwar Mahadev leaning into the Ganges

9.3° Tilt

Steeper Than Pisa

✦ Architectural Anomaly ✦

Ratneshwar Mahadev: The Temple Submerged in River Waters

Standing at the edge of Manikarnika and Scindia Ghats, Ratneshwar Mahadev is one of the world's most dramatic architectural enigmas. While Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa tilts at approximately 3.97 degrees, this towering stone Hindu sanctum leans at a breathtaking 9.3 degrees into the swirling currents of Mother Ganga.

For roughly seven to eight months of the year, its inner sanctum is completely drowned underwater. Only during peak summer when water levels drop does the temple emerge, encrusted in holy silt and river algae.
